Small Business Spotlight - Artistic Minds

By Sarah Hoot, SDA Journalism Intern

Still looking for some unique last minute Christmas gifts? Or maybe just some new decorations for the house? Well look no further than Artistic Minds . This local business is located in Downtown Selah and is owned and operated by Mayor Sherry Raymond and her daughter Ellie Sensney.

“Artistic Minds got started because we wanted to have a place in town to showcase other peoples’ art, other local artists from the Yakima and Selah Valley. We wanted to have a place where everybody could bring their stuff and have it there [in the store] year round,” said Sensney.

selahstoreArtistic Minds opened in January of 2015 and has not changed much since its creation. Artists can bring in their work and they can talk with the owners to see if it can be included in the shop. There is no fee for artists to showcase their work. They can also choose the prices that they want for their pieces. According to Sensney, the store will take 10% of the sales of the work, and the artists are required to teach a class once every six months on what they do.

The art classes that are offered is another way that Artistic Minds helps support and impact the community of Selah and the surrounding area. The artists teach the techniques they use to the participants, as well as showcase their own work that is available for purchase. So local residents can create their own masterpieces and support local artists. Some of the classes that have been offered in the past are jewelry making, homemade bath salts and even stained glass.

As of right now there aren’t any upcoming classes posted but according to Sensney, there may be more as Christmas approaches. The classes are open to everyone in the community and there are options for every age group so everyone can be involved.

According to the Artistic Minds Facebook page, the community loves their local art gallery. With an overall rating score of 5 stars and all positive reviews this is a business worth checking out.

“Awesome new shop! So excited to be a part of it, said Joanie Trout (Facebook).

“What a great idea… a place for unique gifts and a place to learn new things…I love ARTISTIC MINDS,” said Annette Wells (Facebook).

Another thing that the people seem to love about Artistic Minds is that they can work personally with the artists (who are often their neighbors or people they know from the community) both inside of the shop and outside to create custom orders.

If you are looking to explore what Artistic Minds has to offer, head over this weekend. The shop is only opened on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. The store can be found at 3 N 1st St in Selah, and there is parking both on the street and in the nearby parking lot. For any extra information you can contact the business through their Facebook page Artistic Minds, by phone at (509) 985-1501 or by email at elliesensney@gmail.com.
